Retention

When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. Retainers get their name because they are designed to hold or retain the teeth in their new position. This correctly implies that the teeth are going to attempt to move someplace following orthodontic treatment. (the truth is, most people's teeth gradually change positions throughout their lifetime. Wearing braces doesn't change that.)

It is important to wear retainers as instructed. We generally recommend that the retainers be worn full-time at first (except when eating and brushing). Then, we will have you try to wear them only to bed at night. Wearing retainers is a small price to pay for those who wish to protect the investment they have made to have straight teeth and a healthy smile. We will do everything we can to help you maintain the orthodontic results, as you desire.
